Xiaohekou Bridge is the most recent of 4 high bridges that cross the Yanjinhe River gorge in the vicinity of Renhuai city in northern Guizhou Province. The massive beam bridge crosses the Yanjin River just a few hundred meters before its junction with the Chishui River which is the largest waterway in northern Guizhou.

The crossing is part of a short connector expressway called MaoTan that links the city of Maotaizhen on the Chishi waterfront with the Zunchi expressway near Tanchang. Measuring 1,118 meters in length, the span configuration of Xiaohekou is 18×30 +107+200+107 +5×30 meters.

All of this Yanjinhe high bridge craziness began in 1995 when a 190 meter high arch was completed as part of an upgrade to the old route S208. Several years after it opened, the 174 meter arch span was found to be damaged and was subsequently closed. A second Yanjinhe prestressed concrete beam bridge bypassed it in 2007 putting local route S208 on another alignment several hundred kilometers upstream. Then in 2009 the Maotai Bridge was built further upstream as part of the 4-lane Zunchi expressway that connects Renhuai with the G56 expressway to the south.

With the completion of the Xiaohekou beam bridge in 2015, the Yanjinhe gorge became one of the most concentrated high bridge spots in the world, exceeded only by the 6 high bridges of the Malinghe River near Xingyi city and the 6 high bridges along the Shuipan expressway within the Beipanjiang River gorge near Fa’er Bouyei. Not surprisingly, all 3 of these concentrated high bridge locales are in Guizhou Province.
