Completed in 2020, Hisgaura Bridge is the tallest bridge in Colombia with a pier 148 meters tall. The 653 meter long 2-lane cable stayed bridge is part of an upgrade to the Malaga-Curos route in the Santander region. The 330 meter main span of Hisgaura Bridge ranks second among cable stayed bridges in Colombia exceeded only by the 380 meter span of the Pumarejo Bridge.
Completed by Sacyr in 2018, the 135 meter high concrete road deck became problematic when it became obvious that a number of concrete deck segments were cast in an undulating wave that alarmed locals as well as the highway department who initially refused to open the bridge. Eventually engineers approved the uneven deck as being safe and the controversy was finally eliminated by hiding the edge of the span with a flat steel wind barrier.
The Hisgaura Bridge was the second cable stayed bridge in Colombia to have construction problems in 2018 as half the Chirajara Bridge collapsed on January 15, 2018.
Sadly the Chirajara Bridge disaster would not be the last cable stayed accident in 2018 as on August 14 a tower and span of the Morandi cable stayed bridge in Genoa, Italy collapsed from excessive corrosion of the wire stays.
