The original crossing of the Niulan River was part of the 2-lane Zhaodai highway that was completed in 2008. Several years later an upgrade turned the older highway into the southbound lanes of a fully divided part of the 4-lane G85 expressway that goes from Kunming, Yunnan in the south to Chongqing city in the north. The Niulanjiang River flows northwest until it empties into the famous Yangtze River on the border of Sichuan province.

The older crossing is approximately 15 meters lower then its 2016 counterpart. The main span is also smaller at 170 meters versus 190 meters on the Northbound structure.

Breaking with the traditional twin tower piers of most Chinese beam bridges, each of the two main piers of the Niu Lan rise as one solid, continuous box. One end of the bridge terminates into a tunnel.

The upgraded G85 expressway includes several other high beam bridges north of Zhaotong including the 209 meter high Xiongjiagou Bridge.

Niulanjiang Bridge Southbound Elevation
