One of the largest tributaries of the Yangtze River, the beautiful Tangxi River is located just north of Yunyangzhen, midway between the city of Chongqing and the 3 Gorges Dam. A major component of the new highway that skirts along the north side of the Yangtze River, the Tang River bridge crosses over the lower section of the river where the 3 Gorges reservoir has crept into the mountains. The 4-lane highway glides across the canyon on a monster-sized span of 755 feet (230 mtrs) that is held aloft by some of China's tallest piers at 156 meters. The bridge is at least 190 meters if measured to the old level of the Tangxi River. There are several other high Yangtze River tributary crossings on the new expressway including the Meixihe, Daninghe and Shennongxi River bridges.
