One of the greatest and most thrilling wood ravine coasters ever built, the Thunderbolt at Kennywood was created in 1968 by expanding an older ride called the Pippin. The older Pippin coaster was designed by John Miller and had opened in 1924 with several straight drops into a ravine. In 1968 designer Andy Vettel created a new lift that rises out of the ravine and leads to a new helix with several curving drops before plunging back into the ravine on the original Pippin drops.

The final ravine drop is the largest on the entire coaster plunging approximately 85 feet down the hill. The Phantom's Revenge steel coaster passes through the Thunderbolt structure.
