Wanzhou Yangtze River No. 2 Bridge
万州长江二桥
Wanzhou, Chongqing, China
(344) feet high / (105) meters high
1,903 foot span / 460 meter span
2004

A bright, white addition to the arsenal of big bridges across the 3 Gorges reservoir of the Yangtze River, the No. 2 crossing in Wanzhou is the longest span over the Yangtze River upstream of the great dam. Like most of China's large suspension bridges, the side spans are not supported by the main cables. The distance to the old surface level of the Yangtze River is 361 feet (110 meters) or about two thirds of that if measured to the full pool level of the reservoir.

The Yangtze River level was at an elevation of 133 meters in this view from my 2006 visit. Since the full completion of the 3 Gorges Dam, the level has risen 40 more meters to its maximum elevation of 173 meters. The boat dock elevator ramp in the foreground is mostly underwater now.
