The Xiaojinhe Bridge is one of several bridges that were constructed to raise the elevation of roads within the giant Yalong and Woluohe River gorges from the completion of Jinping I, the tallest concrete dam in the world at 305 meters.

Local road S216 crosses the deep reservoir on a 516 meter long beam bridge with a central span of 200 meters supported on piers as high as 110 meters.
