Xiaoxihe Bridge crosses another large tributary of the Yangtze River in a remote region just south of the 3 Gorges reservoir of Hubei. With such deep water at the crossing site, the engineers built the concrete arch using the rotation method whereby the two halves of the arch are constructed just above the ground on either hillside and then rotated out over the canyon in one careful maneuver and then closed at the crown.

This was done for the first time in China in 1987 at the nearby Longmens Bridge in Wushan.
