Located less then 10 kilometers upstream of the 3 Gorges Dam, the Qiaziwan Bridge crosses over a deep arm of the 3 Gorges reservoir. The short crossing is only 10 meters above the full level of the lake but 97 meters above the original level of the stream that is now hidden from view.

Unlike the hundreds of other concrete beam bridges in the region, the engineers of the Qiaziwan Bridge opted for a rare truss cantilever design that uses steel members in a Warren truss configuration. The central span has a configuration of 79.45+140+79.45 meters. The tallest pier is 71 meters and is topped by a concrete V-shaped support that blends into a concrete deck that is 12 meters wide with 7 meters in use for the 2-lanes.
