The second highest single tower cable stayed bridge in the world, the Qingjiang is one of two towering cable stayed bridges on the G50 Huyu highway. Stretching 300 miles (483 km) from Yichang and the 3 Gorges dam in the east to the city of Zhongxian in the west, this 4-lane engineering marvel has more than half a dozen spectacular bridges that exceed 500 feet (150 meters) in height including Zhijinghe and Siduhe, the highest arch and suspension bridges in the world. This more direct route bypasses one of the toughest and most mountainous stretches of the Yangtze River. What once took more than a day of travel on dangerous mountain roads or a Yangtze River boat can now be safely traversed in 5 hours.

Located just south of Enshi, the spot chosen to cross the Qing Jiang River is an asymmetrical void with a nearly vertical drop on the west side and a more mild slope on the east. A tower 541 feet (165 mtrs) high supports a river span of 722 feet (220 mtrs). Completed in mid-2009, the Qing Jiang is the second to last of the 10 major bridges to be finished on the West Hurong highway. The Xiaohe arch bridge is located 25 miles (40 kilometers) further west.

世界上最高的独塔斜拉桥，清江大桥是沪蓉西高速公路上两座高耸的斜拉桥之一。经由三峡库区，从东部的宜昌开始直到西部的忠县全长300英里（483公里）长，这条4车道的工程师们造就的奇迹之路，是两座世界级高桥的“家”——桥面行车道在谷底河面之上473米的世界第一高度的四渡河大桥以及行车道高度位于世界第一的拱桥支井河大桥。这条奇迹之路上还有着6座高度超过150米的大桥，其中就有世界最高的梁式结构的高架桥梁——马水河大桥。这条更为直接的路线将与原先一条极为艰险、崎岖的长江流域的山区的一条公路线相并行。而原先需要一天的山区危险的车程或者长江上的航行，现在都能在5个小时之内实现。

就位于恩施以南，跨越清江的桥址的选择是一个并不对称的深谷，西侧几乎垂直向下而东侧则较为缓一些。高165米的主塔支撑起220米跨度的斜拉桥。在2009年中期建成的清江大桥，是沪蓉西高速上完成的10座主要大桥中的倒数第二座。仅有在其以西25英里（40公里）左右的小河大桥尚未建成。
