Hezhang Bridge
赫章特大桥
Hezhang, Guizhou, China
699 feet high / 213 meters high
591 foot span / 180 meter span
2013
Located near the city of the same name in northwestern Guizhou Province, the giant Hezhang Bridge is one for the record books with a central pier 195 meters high from base to cap. Only Jingyang Bridge, the Millau Viaduct and Mexico's San Marcos bridge have taller piers. The gargantuan super pier supports two main spans of 180 meters with a configuration of 9×40 +96+2×180+96 +5×30 meters. A cable stayed design with a span of 322 meters was studied but passed in favor of the double beam span design.
Located along the S20 Bijie-Weining Expressway, the single-cell box beam spans have a width of 10.73 meters and a bottom width of 6.5 meters. The beam depth is 11.5 meters over the piers and 4 meters at midspan. The massive central pier is rectangular with a dimension of 17.5 by 9 meters with a gradual slope of 60:1. The foundation of the pier is composed of 16 piles with a diameter of 2 meters. The total deck width is 21.5 meters.

The gap shown above is located on the south side of the city where an alternative route for the expressway was studied. The deep canyon would have been crossed with an 808 meter span suspension bridge. Image by Eric Sakowski / HighestBridges.com
