Tamina Bridge
Taminabrücke
Pfäfers, Valens, Switzerland
656 feet high / 200 meters high
850 foot span / 259 meter span
2017
The highest arch bridge ever built in Europe, the Tamina Bridge is also the only bridge in Switzerland to surpass the 200 meter height barrier. Designed by the famous German firm of Leonhardt, Andrä & Partner, the 2-lane asymmetrical concrete arch took 5 years to build and consists of a main arch span of 259 meters with approach spans making for a total structural length of 414 meters or 475.4 meters including approach berm walls.
The new crossing directly connects the villages of Pfäfers and Valens and allows a safer route to Bad Ragaz.
Dozens of bridge designs were studied before the asymmetrical concrete arch span with inclined spandrels was chosen.
