Cliffwalks
The following is a list of the many Cliffwalks that have been constructed at scenic areas throughout the world but mostly in China. Since nearly all of these cantilevered walkways are just 2 to 3 meters in width and are built with simple temporary wood or steel frames, I have not included them in the main categories of more substantial engineering structures. Most of these cliffwalks are made of concrete supported by embedded steel rebar that is anchored directly into large holes drilled into the cliff face.
The following cliffwalks are ranked on the maximum 80 to 90 degree near vertical drop height of the highest point on the structure to the talus below. Nearly all of these figures are based on estimates from my analyzing of photos or from using a laser rangefinder as most scenic areas will exaggerate this height. If you know of a cliffwalk that was not included then send me the information on the walkway so I can add it to the list. Enjoy!
Cliffwalk Construction
Most glass cliffwalks are composed of square panels recessed into a concrete frame with thick steel reinforced beams.
Wood forms are used for most sections of a concrete cliffwalk including stairs.
For the wider walkways such as those built at the Ayihe scenic area, additional concrete struts were used.
The cliff face can be a rock fall hazard requiring a cantilevered protective roof such as this one at the Yunzhiduan Scenic area.
For the wider walkways such as those built at the Ayihe scenic area, additional concrete struts were used.
The Qingjiang Fangshan scenic area has a glass cliffwalk with no railings, requiring a full body harness and carabiner that connects to a bolted wire.
A concrete roof protects the Shijiufeng Jingqui scenic area cliffwalk.
One of the widest walkways can be seen at the Wudangshan scenic area.
A temporary steel cliffwalk support at the Huangyadong scenic area.
The all steel Red Flag Canal cliffwalk is one of the oldest in China.
