The Salso Bridge is one of the longest span high level beam bridges along Italy's great A3 motorway. Just to the north is the even higher Coscile Bridge. Much of the A3 / E45 Salerno-Reggio Calabria Autostrada was widened since 2010 and the most recent plans call for the Salso Bridge deck to have an extra 3 meters added to either edge of the main span making the road deck 24 meters wide. To handle the extra weight an A-frame cable stay tower 31.6 meters tall would be constructed over each pier.

Constructed in a Frankenstein-like fashion in bits and pieces throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the Salerno-Reggio Calabria is a laboratory of Italian civil engineering that includes the monstrous Sfalassa gorge strut frame bridge, the Favazzina cable stayed bridge as well as more conventional bridges like the Aglio concrete arch.
